My writing traces changes in the food system for farming newspapers, locavore outlets like the Edible Communities publications, and sites like Civil Eats and Zester Daily. I teach classes about food justice and manage a soup kitchen, working to increase the amount of fresh food in the menu. I live in a working-class urban community in Upstate New York where neighbors focus on cooperative food production and preparation. My life-long passion for flour and pancakes led me to write a book about regional grain production, The New Bread Basket, which will be published by Chelsea Green in July, 2015.
