Artist in the Schools

My classes and workshops are structured to meet the NYS Learning Standards in English and Language Arts, The Arts, and Social Studies for elementary and middle school classrooms. I lead workshops to discuss my picture book about the regional history of child labor, Hide and Seek, and my comic book about Urban Renewal, Under the Bridge.

In my sessions, I cover the art and hard work of writing and revision. I make the writing process transparent by showing students my research materials, first and final drafts, and comparing those drafts to completed projects.

I am particularly interested in helping students develop a curiosity about the past. Through take-home oral history exercises, I foster intergenerational conversations to bring kids to a broader understanding of time and place. Using my books, and historical texts such as newspaper articles, interviews, and journal entries, I hope to help kids imagine what life was like in other eras.

All of my classroom materials can be tailored to meet instructor needs.
